SEMINAR SUMMARY

A seminar on Cancer Awareness was held on 27/11/2010, by the Durgapur College of Commerce and Science (D.C.C.S.), a premier institution of Biosciences in this region, under the banner of Rahul Foundation.

The Seminar was presided upon by Dr. Prabhakar Chattopadhyay, ex-Director of Health Services and Secretary Dept. of Health & Family Welfare, West Bengal, currently CEO of Gouri Devi Memorial Hospital & Research Institute (G.D.H.R.I.), Rajbandh, Durgapur.
It was attended by various dignitaries, all members of Durgapur College of Commerce and Science and many faculty and students of Rahul Foundation, of which Durgapur College of Commerce and Science is a member.

Other noted speakers included Dr. Tarun K. Mukherjee, ex-Chief Medical & Health Officer, Burdwan, currently Medical Officer, GDHRI, Dr. Sribir Sen, Sr. Lecturer, Head of Department, Microbiology, D.C.C.S. and Mr. Kaustav Mukherjee, Lecturer, Dept. of Biochemistry, D.C.C.S. Participation was also there from the student’s end, Mr. Pranab Mishra, of Second year B. Sc. (Biotech) along with his team presented a talk on breast cancer.

It was attended by various dignitaries, all members of Durgapur College of Commerce and Science and many faculty and students of Rahul Foundation, of which Durgapur College of Commerce and Science is a member.

After the opening remarks by Dr. Shouri Banerjee, Principal, D.C.C.S., regretting the absence of main speaker Dr. Vikash Kumar Agarwal, a noted oncologist and president of the Global Cancer Trust due to an emergency, and welcoming all honorable speakers and attendees, Dr. Chattopadhyay was invited to the stage. Dr. Chattopadhyay emphasized on general health awareness and preventive medicines in his talk. He said that “To improve health awareness among the people, it is important to spread education in general especially in females”. Followed by Dr. Chattopadhyay, Dr. Mukherjee took stage and he talked on various kinds of cancer and their preventive measures. The talk of Dr. Sribir Sen was on emerging alternative food sources and their importance in meeting the dietary demands on our overgrowing population. Talk of Mr. Kaustav Mukherjee was on an important natural product called kispeptin which was followed by Pranab Mishra, a student of Biotechnology, with his talk on Breast Cancer.

The Seminar ended with the vote of thanks by Dr. Shouri Banerjee. As per schedule the event was followed by a ‘meet at tea’, wherein the students and teachers did meet at tea and shared lighter moments. The day ended with a photo session.
